Using Respondus LockDown Browser for Students (Windows/Mac)

Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is a special-purpose Web browser that students may be required to use when taking a quiz in Brightspace. When LDB is launched from within a Brightspace quiz, students will have very limited access to their computer until the quiz is submitted. Students are prevented from printing, copying, going to unauthorized URLs or accessing other applications during a quiz. Essentially, students are “locked” into LDB for the duration of the quiz.

If a Brightspace quiz requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.

LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Brightspace quizzes and should not be used in other areas of Brightspace.

Respondus LDB should already be installed on the CDLI computers in your school. If it is not, please contact the CDLI Help Desk so that the technical staff can do this for you. Details on installing LDB on personal computers can be found at the end of this document. Please do not wait until just before your quiz to check to see if it is installed. It is also recommended that you try a practice quiz requiring LDB in your course before actually taking a graded-quiz using it.

Information on installing LDB on your personal computer can be found at the end of this document.

Before you take a quiz that requires LDB, please close all open programs with the exception of your web browser.

When you are ready to start the quiz in Brightspace, click on the Launch LockDown Browser button on the Brightspace quiz page.

The first time you attempt to launch LDB from within Brightspace, an “Open LockDown Browser” pop-up will appear where you will need to check off “Always allow brightspace.cdli.ca to open links of this type in the associated app” and click Open LockDown Browser.

If you have certain programs running when LDB is launched, you will be prompted to close them. Choose Close Process when prompted for each of the applications.

Once the quiz is opened in LDB, you will see the description and details of the quiz as well as any instructions provided by your instructor. Once you are ready to start, click the Start Quiz button.

Once you have completed the quiz, submit the quiz and click Done, you’re now able to exit LDB by clicking on the Exit LockDown Browser button.

And, click Yes on the Confirmation pop-up.

And, lastly, click Done to finally exit LDB. These extra dialogue boxes are to ensure students do not accidentally close LDB without taking extra steps to do so.

Once LDB is closed, you will be returned back to your regular web browser on the page where you launched LDB.

If you are using your personal computer and need Respondus LDB, you can download it from here. Just follow the instructions on the screen. This particular version should not be installed on school computers.
