How to set up a Brightspace quiz to use Respondus LockDown Browser
Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is a special-purpose Web browser that students may need to use when taking a quiz. When LDB is launched from a Brightspace quiz, students would have limited access on their computer until the quiz is submitted. Essentially, they are “locked” into LDB for the duration of the quiz.
To set up a quiz requiring students to use LDB, instructors would access their Brightspace course and select Quizzes from the Assessment menu.

Select the LockDown Browser tab to open the LDB dashboard. This is where you will set or change any LDB settings for a quiz.

The first time you enter the LockDown Browser Dashboard, you’ll see the following screen.

Check off Do not ask me again for this application and click Continue.

You will then be presented with a page of LockDown Browser Resources. This page will appear each time you access the LDB Dashboard unless you check off Don't show this page again. Click the Continue to LockDown Browser button.

To modify the settings for a specific quiz, select the down arrow to the left of the quiz title and select Settings. This expands the list of the LDB settings.

Select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. This will result in additional LDB settings being displayed.

If you wish students to enter a password to access the quiz from within LDB, enter the password in the space provided. This is an optional setting.
Click Save + Close when done.
There are additional optional settings in the Advanced Settings section. Just click the “+” icon to the left of Advanced Settings. By default, these are all turned off.

Here is a summary of the Advanced Settings:
- Enable Require LockDown Browser to view feedback and results if you only want students to access their quiz results and feedback using LDB.
- Enabling Lock students into the browser until exam is completed will prevent students from exiting LDB until the exam is completed. Optionally, a password can be used to enable a proctor/supervisor to close the browser before the exam is completed. This setting is not recommended for use outside of a proctored/supervised environment. By NOT selecting this setting, a student is able to exit LDB if their Internet connection fails or there is an emergency. A student will be warned twice before being able to close LDB. The student will also be prompted to enter a reason for exiting the exam early. The student's response will be available to the instructor from the LockDown Browser Dashboard.
- Check off Allow students to take this exam with an iPad (using the "LockDown Browser" app from the Apple App Store) if you wish students to take this exam from an iPad. More details on this can be found here.
- You can enable Allow access to specific external web domains which will allow students to access specific websites or domains that you may reference in your quiz. More details can be found here.
- The last two options (Enable Calculator on the toolbar and Enable Printing from the toolbar) allow instructors to provide students with a calculator (Standard or Scientific) or print function in the LDB toolbar.
