Using the Zoom Interface (chat, share screen, reactions)

If your teacher is not in the Zoom room you will see a message similar to the one shown below. Once your teacher logs into Zoom you will be given access to the Zoom room (class).

When you have entered the classroom (Zoom Room), you will have a number of tools available to use in the menu bar.

The first two buttons dealing with video and audio are dealt with in a separate student tutorial (Audio and Video Setup)

Participants Tool

If you click on Participants, you can see who is currently in the meeting.

You will see the following window on the right side of your screen.

Chat Tool

You can chat with individuals or everyone in the meeting.

Click on Chat to open the chat window and chat with other participants or view chat messages.

When you click on Chat the following appears. All chat messages to all the class will appear in the top portion on the Chat screen.

When you want to chat with an individual select the drop down next to To: This will allow you to change who you are chatting with. Chatting to Everyone is a public chat.

Share Screen Tool

If your teacher allows, you can share your screen in the meeting. Your teacher will have the ability to stop your screen share.

To access the Share Screen, click on the option on the menu bar.

The following appears. Select the screen you wish to share and click the Share button.

Once you click the Share button you will see the screen you are sharing appear (as shown in the image on the next page). In our example we are sharing the Whiteboard screen.

While sharing notice that at the top of the screen, the Zoom Menu Bar appears as opposed to at the bottom of the screen. Below the Zoom Menu Bar you will see the Whiteboard Menu Bar.

Both of these bars are draggable. If you click on a portion of the bar that is not a button and hold down on your mouse button you can move these bars to a more convenient location for you.

Reactions Tool

Students are able to send various reactions such as “clapping” or “thumbs up” during the class. There are other emoticons on the first line and under the … there are many others to choose from.

On the second there are other options: yes, no, speed up, slow down and I’m Away. (If you select “I’m Away” a coffee cup will appear with words “I’m Away” in the participants window and the main Zoom display area.)

The third line in this window is the Raise Hand feature. (If you select Raise Hand a hand will appear in the participants window and the main Zoom display area.)

Leaving/Ending Class

You can leave the classroom at any time by clicking on the Leave Meeting option at the lower right corner of the Zoom window.

Once you click on the Leave button, the following appears giving you an option to confirm leaving the classroom or cancelling to stay in the classroom.
