Screencast-O-Matic Recording Tutorial

PowerPoint

Open the PowerPoint file that you want to present.

Play the PowerPoint by clicking the “From Beginning” Play Button. (You need to be on the Slide Show Tab for this.)

Decide which monitor you are going to capture. Select the monitor by clicking the “DISPLAY SETTINGS” dropdown list and “Swap Presenter View and Slide Show” if necessary.

If you are NOT capturing your primary monitor it might be a good idea to click the “Show Taskbar Button”.

Setting up your PowerPoint

Select your pen tool by passing your mouse over the lower left corner of your presentation and click the pen tool.

The following window should appear.

You have the option to use the Laser Pointer, Pen or Highlighter. You also have the option to change your pen color.

Try writing on the screen to get accustomed to the pointer.

Using PowerPoint Tools

When you are using the pen tool you can advance the slides by using the arrow keys on your keyboard or the arrow keys in the presenter view.

If you want to stop your presentation you can press the “esc” key on your keyboard.

If you have any markings on the presentation you will get the following message. It is fine to Discard your ink annotations

Screencast-O-Matic

Comfortable with PowerPoint? Now let’s start Screencast-O-Matic.

You can find it by searching for it. Once you have found it, you may want to “pin it to your taskbar”. This will make it easy to access from now on.

You can pin it by right clicking on the program shortcut in the programs menu and selecting “Pin to taskbar”.

Start Screencast-O-Matic and click the record button.

Moving the Capture Window

Move the capture window to the monitor you want to capture by clicking and dragging on the four sided arrow. If you do not see the box shown below your capture size is already set to Full screen. See the next slide to see how to change this.

Select the Capture Size

Click on “Size”.

Then select “Fullscreen”.

Setting up Audio

Click on “Narration

Select your “microphone”.

Click the “Record” button to test your microphone.

Talk for a few seconds into the microphone

Playback

After you have talked for a few seconds click the “Play” button.

You should hear your recording if the microphone is good click the “OK” button.

Double check the monitor to make sure you are still in the right window turn off Full Screen to see the selection box and then Full Screen on again.

Start your slideshow. (Swap Monitors if necessary.)

The microphone is good. The correct monitor is being recorded.

Click on the “Record” button.

Turn on your pen and start to present.

The Stop icon does not show up in your recording.

When you are ready to stop the recording click the Stop button.

The following window will appear.

Click “Done

Click the “Save As Video File” to save the video.

File Name

Ensure that the file type is “MP4

Click on “Filename

Enter a name that is descriptive – for example: “U1L1_short_story_terms

Next click on “Folder

You have an option then to go to “Recent Folders” or “Browse”.

The first time you will probably Browse to the folder that you set up for your videos.

After the first time this folder should show up in Recent Folders.

Cursor Setting

Screencast-O-Matic puts a yellow light around your cursor unless you tell it not to.

Click on Cursor.

Select “No Cursor”

Publish

Click the “Publish” button.

A window similar to the one shown here should appear.

This window should appear when the rendering is done. Click on the “Browse Folder” button to see your video’s location.

A window should appear showing where your videos are stored.

Pen Tool in Screencast-O-Matic

Be careful NOT TO TURN ON THE PEN TOOL FOR SCREENCAST-O-MATIC. It does not work as well as the pen tool in PowerPoint.
