Opportunities are possibilities. Thinking of opportunities opens up possibilities for new opportunities. This kind of thinking is what leads to new and innovative ideas, new products and services, and new ways of doing things. For example, an entrepreneurial designer might look at communications and think, "what if i could build a tool that would let people express their ideas visually without them having to know how to draw?". This is the opportunity, to do something not previously done, have fun doing it, give people a useful product, and make a bundle of money! Of course making it happen can be a lot of work.
Problem situations tend to arise because of conditions or events beyond our direct control. They present specific conditions which must be resolved. For example, suppose your school is having a tournament, and would like the event publicized. The situation is created by the event and the requirements of the event. Of course a problem situation for one group (the school) could be an opportunity for another (you for example).
As you work through these activities you will need to record the information in your design portfolio. You should have already installed it on your computer when you did Part 4 of the Unit 1 Project.
Activity
Actions you need to take
Identify a minimum of five opportunities for developing solutions to communications problems.
Develop a list of project ideas. Sources of ideas include
the teacher
your friends
projects you are working on elsewhere
hobbies
personal interests
These should not be variations of the same idea, but completely different ideas. It is important to do this without being too judgemental about the ideas when you are identifying them.
Open your Design Portfolio in FrontPage, and go to Design Stage 1 Part 1
the folder/filename is designstage1/d1-part1.htm
Record each idea in a separate row in column one of the table
Record a detailed description of each idea in the corresponding row in column two of the table
Publish your updated design portfolio to your design website
If you have not done this before, go to the Unit 1 Project, Part 4 and follow the instructions for first time publishing. If you have published this to the server previously, click the publish button
