Lesson

The purpose of Focus C is to prepare you for the development of the general rotational matrix, which will be used to develop trigonometric identities in the next section.

Your success with this Focus hinges on your ability to summarize information in a given problem, appropriately set up matrix multiplication, and correctly interpret the results.

Read Focus C as outlined on pages 237& 238 of your text. Hints and suggestions are provided. Use them only if you experience difficulty while progressing through the Focus Questions.

A summary of Focus C is provided.

Notebook Entry:

  • Record the process for multiplying matrices.
  • Record the general matrices discovered in Questions 1 and 2, as well as how they are applied for various types of transformations.

Activity

Focus questions pages 238 & 239 #'s 1 -5

C.Y.U. pages 240 & 241 #'s 6 & 7

When you have completed these questions, ask your on-site teacher to get the solutions for you from the Teacher's Resource Binder and check them against your answers. After you do this, if there is something you had trouble with and still do not understand, contact your on-line teacher for help.

Test Yourself

Find the image of ABC with points located at A(1, 3), B(7, 2) and C(6, -2) for each of the following transformations.

  1. Reflection in the x-axis.
  2. Reflection in the y-axis.
  3. Reflection in the line y = x.
  4. Rotation of 90° about the origin.
