Investigation1: The Pressure and Volume Relationship for a Gas & Focus A: Functions of the Form

Step E
  • Even though other regression models will give reasonable fits to the data, power regression is the best to use.
  • Remember that the variables are in inverse proportion; as the value of one quantity increases, the value of the other decreases.
  • It is evident that the graphed function is not quadratic. If it were, you would expect it to increase again after some minimum value had been reached. This is obviously not the case since further increases in pressure will only result in decreased volume.
  • Examine what happens to the graph as the value of V approaches zero. This will help you to see why an exponential model is most appropriate.
