You have experienced the word rate used in various contexts such as when you have a part time job or summer job you receive a rate of pay, when you visit a doctor (s)he will likely take your heart rate, or when driving you refer to the speed that you are driving which is essentially a rate of travel ( a change in distance over time )

Read the introduction to Investigation 1 and make sure you understand the situation being described and the the implications of the given table.

In this investigation you will explore speed as a rate of change in the context of driving a car. If you experience difficulty with this investigation click here for hints and suggestions.

Complete the Investigation Questions ( p. 77) and discuss the results before continuing with this lesson.

  1. Write a journal entry explaining the relationship between the rate of change and the definition of slope for a line.
  2. Mr. Hynes drove 50 km in 40 minutes, then 20 km in 20 minutes, and then 40 km in the next 30 minutes.
    1. Predict how the average speed is changing.
    2. Calculate the average speed over the three time periods.
    3. Calculate the overall average speed.
    4. Discuss why the overall average speed makes sense with respect to the three partial-trip speeds.
