The Importance of Selecting the Right Courses

High school is a time of making important decisions that will affect your future. Courses you choose to do will have an effect on post secondary programs after graduation. All students require 36 credits to graduate in the NL school system. To gain specific information on the required credits and subject area requirements please refer to pages 3-5 in the Oncourse Handbook for Grade 9 Students and Parents. This resource is available under the "Senior High" section of the Guidance Room. These pages will help you understand the four levels of graduation status: graduation with honours status; graduation with academic status; graduation with general status and graduation with French Immersion status.

It is imperative that the time is taken to choose courses that complement academic ability. An important note is that choosing courses enroute to satisfying minimum graduation requirements does not necessarily satisfy entrance requirements for many post secondary schools. As well, courses that fulfill general academic status (also referred to as basic courses) may prohibit enrolment in academic courses later in high school. The key is to choose courses that match academic ability to ensure success and future career goals. You are encouraged to refer to the Oncourse Handbook for information on these topics and other information that will help ensure informed decisions are made.
