Outcomes

In this lesson you will

  • describe electromagnetic radiation and waves
  • describe the electromagnet spectrum
  • identify applications of electromagnetic radiation and their location on the spectrum

Introduction

This section introduces many of the communications technologies that rely on radio frequency transmission and reception.  Basic principles underlying each are presented.

The first two lessons on electromagnetic radiation and carrier waves provide a background for understanding the lessons on radio, radar, satellite, GPS, and Loran C.  Some of the information in sensing and control, particularly that related to remote sensing, is also based on information in lessons 1 and 2.

Students will:

  • explain the basic concepts of electromagnetic radiation and the electromagnetic spectrum
  • describe carrier waves and modulation
  • describe the key concepts of
    • radio
    • radar
    • sonar
    • satellites
    • Global Positioning System (GPS)
    • Geographic Information systems (GIS)
    • loran C
    • sensing and control

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • basics of electricity and electronics
  • how to use two-way radios and remote controls
