Outcomes

In this lesson you will

  • describe the terms type, typeface, and font;
  • describe the six different categories, or classifications of type;
  • describe the attributes which are used in the design of type;
  • define the following terms as they apply to effective type usage: type effect, type texture, serif/sans-serif, justification, emphasis and contrast;
  • create a series of text blocks to illustrate different type classifications, attributes, and which demonstrate effective type usage.

Students will:

  • understand the basics of visual design
  • employ the elements and principles of visual design in creating images, and to construct print and web layouts
  • use typography effectively
  • use illustration software to create effective page layouts

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:
