Lesson

Print components will relate to the overall design you are developing. Depending on your intent, the print components may be in support of the web site, a full parallel to it, or the web site may be in support of the print.

You will need to decide things like

  • the purpose of the print materials
  • how it will be organized (poster, newsletter, etc)
  • size and number of pages
  • how it will be produced (b/w, colour, how printed)
  • volume to be produced
  • how it will be created (freehand artwork, graphics program (for example, Draw), desktop publishing (for example, Publisher)

You will need to

  • sketch layouts, including positioning of graphic elements, text blocks, headings, callouts and so on
  • decide on fonts, sizes, leading, columns, gutters, and other page layout issues.
  • create the elements, reusing content from the web site as appropriate. Remember you may need to have graphics with different resolutions for print. Typically for an inkjet or laser printer, 150dpi images are quite adequate resolution.

Activity

Document the development of the print components here.

Include all activities, changes, decisions and the reasons for them, samples of work particularly if it is stuff that you are changing. This should document the history of development, so include all stuff that is being discarded and a brief note saying why. Put dates on every entry

Activity

Actions you need to take

Plan print component

Plan layout, content for layout, identify content in the web site for inclusion, determine if any web pieces need to be modified and how it needs to be modified. Document all decisions and reasons in page designstage3/ds3-part4.htm of the design portfolio

Produce the print component

Develop the print component according to your plan. If changes were made, document them along with the reasons in page designstage3/ds3-part4.htm of the design portfolio

Produce the print component.
