Graphic components

The graphical content includes images and technical drawings and illustrations created to help present the ideas and information critical to your message.

As you learned in Unit 2, there are a variety of issues around graphic design. This part o the solution is concerned with the content you are building as part of the message in your solution - the content. Try to develop a style for the graphics that you will use throughout the whole project.

In general you should

  • sketch the graphics and work with them until you are satisfied
  • develop the final versions of the graphics, keeping in mind that they will need to be used in a web setting in and in print, and the two require different sizes and resolutions.

One way to get around this is to create the graphics in a vector program like Draw. The image can be exported at any size and resolution, and in any format you want. All the images in this course (including navigation), for example, were produced in Corel Draw 11, and exported as .jpg files at 96dpi. They can also be exported as .tif files at 2400dpi for publication in a magazine.

You may also wish to create artwork by hand and scan it. YOu may need to experiment with settings to get good versions for the web. You may need to use different settings when scanning for inclusion in print.

Multimedia components

This includes audio, video, and animation. These components are well suited to use in the web. You will need to select formats that work well in the web. Also give consideration to the onscreen size and to the file size.

In general you should

  • write short scripts for each piece of media you will create
  • work out the details as much as you can before commencing production. The better you plan, the easier and quicker it will be to produce
  • get all the materials and tools together before you start production
  • try to complete production of one thing before commencing another. This will help ensure continuity in the media.

Further Information

Activity

Document the development of the multimedia components here.

Include images, animations, video, audio and so on that will be used in the web developed for the solution. Include all activities, changes, decisions and the reasons for them, samples of work particularly if it is stuff that you are changing. This should document the history of development, so include all stuff that is being discarded and a brief note saying why. Put dates on every entry

The design portfolio page for this step is Develop Solution, Part 3 Multimedia Components. Record information here for graphics and multimedia.

Activity

Actions you need to take

Plan the graphics components

Document all planning materials and decisions related to the process and choices you made. Use the design portfolio page designstage3/ds3-part3.htm to document information

Produce the graphics

Place the graphics in the appropriate places in you web site, and if necessary in your print materials.
