Lesson

Now that you have a number of ideas for solving the problem, it is time to determine which idea is most suitable, or if additional thinking is required. Assessing the ideas requires assessment criteria. Examples of assessment criteria and what they measure include

  • Practicality - is this practical to do?
  • Reliability - how reliable would this be for long term use
  • Economical - would this be cost effective?
  • Resource Availability - can we get what we need to do this?
  • Durability - would this stand up to constant use?
  • Aesthetic Appeal - does this have good visual appeal? would people like it from a visual perspective?
  • Degree of Difficulty - how easy would it be to develop this?
  • Time Factor - can it be done in the time allowed?
  • Safety - how safe is this to do? how safe would the solution be to use?
  • Servicing - if it fails or breaks down, how easy would it be to fix?
  • Meets Standards - how well can this be done to suit the specifications in the design brief?
  • Meets Need - how well would this solution solve the problem?

These are generic criteria. Additional or alternate criteria may be needed to assess ideas in a particular situation.

The criteria you identified will be used to assess the solution ideas. Each criteria can be given a value from 1 to 5. It is important to word the criteria so that a higher value of what you want to measure is actually a higher number. Look for example at Degree of Difficulty. As the purpose is stated, "how easy would it be to develop this?", 1 means difficult, and 5 means easy. If the question was asked, "how hard is it to develop this?", then 1 would be easy and 5 would be hard.
