Lesson

The design brief has the following components

  • The problem situation
  • The problem statement
  • Specifications and limitations (criteria, special conditions)
  • The solution must (what the successful design must do)
  • The designers will deliver (what the designer must do)

The Problem Situation

This section is a brief description of the situation or opportunity. It usually describes the setting and gives a context for the problem statement, for example

The team is performing well, but the school and community do not see them as exciting. Attendance at games is low.

The Problem Statement

This section is a one sentence statement that clearly outlines the problem to be resolved, for example

Get the school and community involved in supporting and promoting the team

Specifications and Limitations

This section sets the limits and constraints on what you can do in developing a solution. The section should include information such as

  • time frame (start date, end date, critical events and dates)
  • feedback from the client and how to modify work based on feedback
  • components of the solution
  • budget limitations
  • requirements for processes and technologies
  • rules and regulations that need to be followed
  • standards to be met for the solution

The Solution Must

This section briefly describes what the outcome of the solution must be. It does not say anything about how it should accomplish it.

Example

The solution must result in more interest in the team within the school and community, better reporting of the games, higher attendance at games, and a sense that it is 'our team'.

The Designers will Deliver

This is a brief statement of the things you will deliver as part of this project. For a typical student design activity, this includes

  • a workable solution (the design or product)
  • a fully documented design portfolio, built into the supplied portfolio template
  • a report to the class or teacher which contains
    • the brief,
    • the solution,
    • a summary of the design process including development issues and decisions
    • recommendations for improvements in the solution, or in the process used to achieve the solution

Activity

The teacher may provide a For each component of the design brief, you will need to consult with the teacher. Remember that the design brief is a contract between client and designer. Contracts are negotiated. It is important that each side knows what to expect. This ensures that both sides have a better chance of getting what they want.
