Outcomes

In this lesson you will learn

  • a review of the process of proving trigonometric identities

By the end of this section students will be able to:

  • examine, interpret and apply the relationship between trigonometric functions and their inverses
  • explore and verify trigonometric identities
  • analyze and solve polynomial, rational, irrational, absolute value and trigonometric equations

Introduction

In Mathematical Modeling, Book 2 you worked extensively with trigonometric identities. You will now build on that work to develop the compound angle and double angle identities. In addition, you will apply these identities to solve trigonometric equations and to prove other identities.

As well, you will investigate the inverse trigonometric relations and will apply your understanding to solve trigonometric equations. An understanding of trigonometric identities is essential.

This unit of work requires 6 to 7 hours for completion.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • an understanding of trigonometric identities
  • processes used in proving trigonometric identities
  • computations involving rational expressions
  • domain
  • unit circle
