Outcomes

In this lesson you will learn

  • the properties of the reciprocal trigonometric functions, cosecant, secant and cotangent
  • to graph the reciprocal trigonometric functions
  • the use of the calculator when working with reciprocal trigonometric ratios

By the end of this section students will be able to:

  • model situations with periodic curves
  • analyze relations, functions and their graphs
  • analyze the effect of parameter changes on the graphs of functions and express the changes using transformations
  • explore and analyze the graphs of the reciprocal trigonometric functions
  • investigate and interpret combinations and compositions of functions

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • the primary trigonometric functions
  • the reciprocal identities
  • the unit circle
  • the graphs of the primary trigonometric functions
  • domain and range
  • maximum and minimum values
  • odd and even functions
  • asymptotic behaviour
  • intervals of increase and decrease
  • interval notation
  • transformations
