Outcomes

In this lesson you will learn

  • to graph the tangent function using transformations

By the end of this section students will be able to:

  • model situations with periodic curves
  • analyze relations, functions and their graphs
  • analyze the effect of parameter changes on the graphs of functions and express the changes using transformations
  • explore and analyze the graphs of the reciprocal trigonometric functions
  • investigate and interpret combinations and compositions of functions

Introduction

This section begins with a review of graphing trigonometric functions written in transformational form. This knowledge will then be extended as you attempt to graph the tangent function. You will then begin to investigate the graphs of the reciprocal trigonometric functions.

By the end of this section of study, you should have developed a thorough understanding of how any trigonometric function can be graphed and how to determine the function that describes any trigonometric graph.

This section should take approximately 4 hours to complete.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • the graphs of the three primary trigonometric functions
  • transformations and mapping rules
  • how to determine the amplitude, equation of the sinusoidal axis and the period of the sine and cosine functions
  • limits
  • asymptotes
  • intervals of increase and decrease
