Lesson

One or all of the Case Studies may be assigned by your teacher. The following hints, questions, and suggestions are offered to help you successfully progress through each Case Study.

Case Study 1: Average Cost - An Application of a Rational Function
  • Theoretically, the variable for the number of hockey sticks could take on any integer value greater than one, since one will result in a vertical asymptote. However, there are practical constraints that must be considered.
  • Think about the logistics and practicality of producing a hockey stick that costs several hundred dollars to make. Is this practical? Would there be sufficient demand for such a stick?
  • Would there be a limit on the number of sticks the factory could produce in a given period of time?
  • These are all things you should consider when determining the domain and range of the function.
  • Note the horizontal asymptote of the graph you produce. What significance does it have in the context of the problem?
Case Study 2: Drawing Graphs Using Transformations
  • Recall the importance of order when working with transformations.
  • Separate transformations (translations excluded) must be considered with regard to order. Reflections - Stretches - Translations
