Outcomes

In this lesson you will learn

  • the natural logarithm
  • the relationship between the functions y = exand y = ln x

By the end of this section students will be able to:

  • determine, describe, and apply the value for "e"
  • determine and apply the derivative of a function
  • extend the understanding of exponential growth and decay through multiple contexts
  • analyze relations, functions, and their graphs
  • use tables and graphs as tools to interpret expressions
  • demonstrate an understanding for the conceptual foundations of limit, the area under a curve, the rate of change, and the slope of the tangent line, and their applications
  • evaluate and apply limits

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • the relationship between exponential and logarithmic functions
  • the number e
  • properties of logarithms
  • how to use logarithms to solve exponential equations
  • transformations
  • domain and range
  • asymptotes
  • properties of y = ex
  • inverse functions
