Example 4

This example involves an extended sentence as two inequality symbols are used. The given extended sentence leads to two further extended sentences, each of which must be solved. If you are having difficulty following the solution method given in the text, an alternate method is provided below.

The solution is the common intervals of the resulting inequalities.

-12 < x < -7 or 3 < x < 8

If you have difficulty readily identifying the common intervals from your answers, you can graph all four parts on a number line and look for places of common intersection.
