Outcomes

In this lesson you will learn

  • properties of square-root functions
  • to recognize irrational functions
  • to find the inverse of a given function
  • to restrict the domain of a given function so that the inverse is also a function

By the end of this section students will be able to:

  • analyze relations, functions, and their graphs
  • use tables and graphs as tools to interpret expressions
  • investigate and interpret combinations and compositions of functions
  • analyze and solve polynomial, rational, irrational, absolute value, and trigonometric equations
  • explore and describe the connections between quadratic equations and their inverses
  • factor polynomial equations
  • analyze and solve polynomial, rational, irrational, and absolute value inequalities

Introduction

To date you have done an incredible amount of work with rational functions. This section of the unit is dedicated to the study of irrational functions. You will analyze and plot graphs of irrational functions. The conclusion of this section deals with irrational equations and inequalities.

It will take about 5 hour to complete this section of study.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • the term "principal square root"
  • domain and range
  • inverse functions
  • quadratic functions
  • transformations
  • how to use the Vertical Line Test to determine if a graph represents a function
  • how to find the vertex of a parabola
  • horizontal asymptotes (for question #16)
  • composition of functions (for question #17)
