Read the directions for the Chapter Project outlined on page 84 of your text very carefully. Your task is to apply the concepts you have learned to your design. You will soon realize, however, that some of the components required have not yet been studied. Begin by trying to incorporate the the concepts you have developed to date and, as you progress through the rest of the unit, you can decide what how to tackle the other types of functions that are on the list.
Prepare a preliminary design. Experimenting with a graphing calculator or graphing software will make this process much easier. State the functions you use as well as their respective domains. Be sure to keep notes on all your attempts as you will be responsible for writing an essay describing your procedure. At the end of the chapter you are to hand in your initial work along with your completed design.
Remember, the final product is to include a paragraph describing the final design and the attempts you made to create it.
If you're still asking yourself "how do I begin this project?", below are a few suggestions.
Some of you may decide on your design first and then choose the necessary functions to complete it. Others may just start plotting the necessary functions the design must contain and see where it takes them.
Note: Restricting the domain of a function may be necessary to complete a portion of your project.
If you're still not sure where to start, I suggest you try various functions and see what you can create. Naturally, several changes will have to be made to the original functions and /or their domains.
A sample creation is provided. The possibilities are endless!
