Outcomes

In this lesson you will learn

  • the shapes of cubic and quartic functions, and how they relate to the number of real roots of the corresponding equation
  • how to determine if the graph of a function crosses or touches the x-axis at the value of a root

By the end of this section students will be able to:

  • model problem situations with combinations and compositions of functions
  • analyze relations, functions and their graphs
  • use tables and graphs as tools to interpret combinations and compositions of functions
  • represent complex numbers in a variety of ways

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • how to find the roots of functions
  • how to graph a quadratic function
  • how the roots of a quadratic function determine the positioning of the graph
  • The term "discriminant" and what its value indicates about parabolic graphs
  • how to determine x and y-intercepts of a polynomial function
  • how to find the square root of a negative number
  • how to tell the degree of a polynomial
  • transformations
