Lesson

This project, outlined on page 21 of your text, may be done individually or in pairs. Consult with your on-line teacher to discuss an arrangement. If you are presently taking a visual arts course, you may want to consult the teacher about other mathematical art.

You should do an Internet search to find out about mathematical art. Sites such as the Math Forum offer interesting examples.  You can visit this web site at:

http://www.mathforum.org

You will be expected to work on this project outside of class time. Feel free to use pastels, oils, acrylics, or any other medium you wish when creating your design. As well, you may use computer software to create a graphic if you wish.

The first piece of work for your exhibit is to be a visual representation of a geometric series. You might, for instance, use the terms of a geometric series and incorporate them into a design. Buried in a design, for example, could be the symbols 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and128.

Perhaps you might build a design including shapes with sides that represent terms in a geometric sequence such as {3, 6, 12, 24}.

Another option is to build shapes for which the ratios of the areas form a geometric sequence. The shapes can then be rearranged to make interesting designs. An illustration is provided.

Activity

Begin to sketch the first piece for your art portfolio, as directed by your teacher.
