Outcomes
In this lesson you will
- define probability and use probability notation to explore theoretical probability
By the end of this section students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding that determining probability requires the quantifying of outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding of the Fundamental Counting Principle and apply it to calculate probabilities of dependent and independent events
- develop and apply simulations to solve problems
Introduction
Mathematical Modeling, Book 3 p.300 - 306
The purpose of this section is to introduce the basic ideas of probability and the terminology. It presents an expression for P(success) and distinguishes between theoretical probability and experimental probability.
This section should take 3 hours to complete.
Prerequisites
To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:
- familiarity with probability
- theoretical probability
- experimental probability
- playing cards
