Outcomes

In this lesson you will

  • explore trigonometry as a circular function
  • discover how circle coordinates relate to the the trigonometric functions of the corresponding central angle

By the end of this section students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between angle rotation and the coordinates of a rotating point
  • represent circles using parametric equations
  • describe and apply parameter changes within parametric equations of circles
  • solve problems involving the equations and characteristics of circles and ellipses

Introduction

Mathematical Modeling, Book 3    p.268 - 277

Assuming you have completed M2204 or M2205, this section should be a review of the trigonometry learned in that course. If not, you may need to seek extra help in completing this section. You will extend your understanding of trigonometry as a circular function; explore angle measures greater than 90°, express angles as rotations, and use radian measure. Finally as a new topic, circles will be explored as parametric equations on a graphing calculator.

This section should take you between 3 to 4 hours to complete.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • familiarity with using a graphing calculator
  • Trigonometric functions for a right triangle
