Outcomes
In this lesson you will
- make and test conjectures about the three laws of logarithms
By the end of this section students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the properties of logarithms and apply them
- solve problems involving exponential and logarithmic equations
- solve exponential and logarithmic equations
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationships that exist between arithmetic operations and the operations used when solving equations
- apply real number exponents in expressions and equations
- model real-world phenomena using exponential functions
Introduction
Mathematical Modeling, Book 3 p.176 - 188
As with exponents, there are a set of laws that can make calculations with logarithms much easier. Since logarithms are actually exponents written in a different form, the properties of exponents can be used to find the properties or laws of logarithms. These patterns will simplify your work with logarithmic expressions and equations.
This section should take 5.5 hours to complete.
Prerequisites
To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:
- converting from logarithmic to exponential form and vice versa
- laws of exponents with same base
