Lesson

Using a real situation you will compare the growth of two different bacteria populations whose growth is modelled by exponential functions. In analyzing the growth, the number of bacteria in thousands is studied before and after the formal study began - the negative x-values represent before and the negatives after.

Complete the investigation and investigation questions.

Activity

Investigation Questions p.122. Complete 41 to 49 inclusive

Check Your Understanding p.123. Complete 53 and 54

When you have completed these questions, ask your on-site teacher to get the solutions for you from the Teacher's Resource Binder and check them against your answers. After you do this, if there is something you had trouble with and still do not understand, contact your on-line teacher for help.

After you do the assigned activities, continue on to the Test Yourself section below for a quick quiz on this lesson.

Test Yourself

  1. Write a Journal entry discussing when a set of data that exhibits exponential behaviour should be graphed as a continuous curve or a discrete curve or as a step function. (Refer to the questions regarding Donnie's debt in Focus B and question 41 p.122 to help your description)
  2. Consider the functions and .
    1. Predict which is growing at at faster rate.
    2. Predict which function has greater y-values when x > 0 .
    3. Predict which function has greater y-values when x < 0 .
    4. Predict whether these functions will intersect the x-axis.
    5. Sketch both graphs for -2 < x < 2 to confirm your predictions.
