The original sports complex has an Area of 20 x 30 = 600 m²  

The new Sports Complex has double the area or 1200 m²   

The new width will be (20 + x) and the new length will be (30 + x) where x represents the width of the strip. Since the area of a rectangular region is length times width we have the following equation:

The - 60 is inadmissible since width cannot be a negative measure. Therefore, the width of the strip to be added is 10 meters.
