Lesson

This lesson provides the opportunity to study stopping distances for a vehicle under various road conditions. Since many of you are either new drivers or preparing to obtain your drivers license, this is relevant material for you.

The table gives four different road conditions for which you should be able to find an equation through the use of scatter plots and regression analysis and/or from the sequences of differences and systems of equations.

Complete the Focus Questions and Challenge Yourself as listed in the activities.

Which method do you find easier, the regression or sequences of differences to find the equation? Why?

Activity

Focus Questions p.19. Complete 10 to 16 inclusive

Think About p.18

Challenge Yourself p.19

Check Your Understanding   p. 19. Complete 17

When you have completed these questions, ask your on-site teacher to get the solutions for you from the Teacher's Resource Binder and check them against your answers. After you do this, if there is something you had trouble with and still do not understand, contact your on-line teacher for help.

After you do the assigned activities, continue on to the Test Yourself section below for a quick quiz on this lesson.

Test Yourself

An automobile is tested for braking distances at various speeds with the following results:

Speed(km/h)

Distance(m)

0

0

50

24.15

80

53.07

100

75.61

120

97.18

Create a scatter plot and use the proper regression to find a possible equation to model this data.
