Outcomes

In this lesson you will learn

  • Investigate the Fundamental Counting Principle.
  • Construct tree diagrams to illustrate the counting principle.
  • Define sample space.

By the end of this section you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Fundamental Counting Principle and apply it to calculate probabilities of dependent and independent events.
  • Determine conditional probability.
  • Apply area diagrams and tree diagrams to interpret and determine probabilities of dependent and independent events.

Introduction

In this unit you will study the Fundamental Counting Principle and apply it to probability. You will learn to distinguish between dependent and independent events and how to calculate their probabilities.

You will learn how the words "AND" and "OR" are used in probability and their relation to the addition principle.

You will learn how to model experimental probability using area diagrams. You will learn how to use tree diagrams to help calculate conditional probability.

This section should take you about 6.5 hours to complete.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • The meaning of and how to calculate theoretical probability.
  • How to construct tree diagrams.
