Outcomes
In this lesson you will
- Define probability.
- Define the term "odds" and see how it differs from probability.
- Use probability notation.
- Define the complement of an event.
- Explore theoretical probability.
By the end of this section you should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding that determining probability requires the quantifying of outcomes.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Fundamental Counting Principle and apply it to calculate probabilities of dependent and independent events.
- Develop and apply simulations to solve problems.
Introduction
In this section you will be introduced to the basic concepts of probability and related terminology. You will learn about and calculate the probability of the success of an event - denoted P(success) - and distinguish between theoretical and experimental probabilities.
This section should take you about 3 hours to complete.
Prerequisites
To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:
- The basic concept of probability.
- The difference between experimental and theoretical probability.
- How to use simulation to model an event.
