Lesson

Your first step is to determine which of the two projects you wish to undertake. Take a few minutes to read about both, then decide. Whichever project you undertake, the intent is to incorporate various circle properties such as diameters, chords, radii, arcs, concentric circles, etc. into the design. You might consider discussing the project with the art teacher in your school. If you are doing an art or design class, you may wish to use this as a project for both classes.

Logo Design

Start by examining copies of various logos in your neighborhood. Check in you school or community library for books on logo design. Also check in newspapers, magazines, or do an internet search using the key words logo design. If you do an internet search, one of the first things that you will notice is how much money you can make doing logo designs.

In your search, look especially for logos that have circular components in their design as this is the focus of your project .   At this stage, you should be considering the following questions:

  • Which logos did you readily recognize?
  • What do all good logos have in common?
  • What shapes and colors are used in logos?
  • Why would an organization use a logo?
  • What should a logo do for an organization?
Flower Garden Design

Start by looking around you local community for interesting garden designs.. Check in you school or community library for books on gardening and garden design. Do an internet search using the key words garden design. One site in particular that you should visit is www.peacegarden.com and have a look at the floral clock at the International Peace Garden.

At this step you should be considering the following questions:

  • What color combinations of flowers are effective?
  • Do different color combinations convey different moods?
  • Are some designs more "formal" than others?
  • How can height variation be used to add definition and detail to the garden?
  • Can you make the garden appealing for the entire growing season (if you have access to a local nursery or park, you may wish to consult with them regarding this)?

Activity

At this point you should make a rough sketch of your logo or flower garden design. You may wish to show it to other students or teachers at your school to get their reaction about its artistic appeal and whether you have incorporated circles effectively in your design.

The design sketch at this should include at least the following elements:

  • at least two circles that are not concentric.
  • at least one chord and/or a diameter.
  • use of the perpendicular bisector of a chord.
  • either be a colored drawing or indicate the colors you intend to use.

When you have your preliminary sketch completed, send it to your on-line teacher for discussion and approval.

Test Yourself

There are no extra questions for this lesson. Simply submit your design to your online teacher.
