As each part of the project for this Unit is introduced it should be completed in its entirety. That way it can be submitted for evaluation, if requested, any time during the unit or at the end of the unit.
To effectively manage this or any chapter project you should:
Read the introduction to this activity and make a list of the relevant facts for each person: Richard, John, and Sadie. Organize your information in a table similar to the one below.
Initial # of bacteria/cm2 |
freezing |
cooling |
doubling time in minutes |
total time for bacteria growth (in hours) |

Richard | 4 |

Be especially careful with the information about the meat that Sadie has. Because she kept the meat in the freezer for the first 2.5 hours, there was no bacteria growth at all. The bacteria was growing in her meat for only 0.5 hours prior to the party. The graph for this data will be different for the different parts of the domain.
At this time you are not expected to find any function rules. Just use the information to get some points on the graphs. This can be done by creating a table of values using the information about the doubling time from the above chart.
A table for Richard's data has been partially completed to show you how:
Time | 0 min | 15 min | 30min | 45min | 1 h 15 min | 1 h 30 min | .................... |
# E-coli/cm2 | 4 |
8 |
16 |
32 |
64 |
128 |
At this time, do only parts (a) and (b) of the Project. Plot the graphs for question (a) using tables similar to the one above. Again note that for the first 2.5 h, there is no growth in the bacteria in the meat that Sadie has.
Also, only give a general answer for (b), as this and the remaining questions will be addressed in later sections.
Read through the introduction to the Chapter Project and organize the information in point or chart form. Generate a table for each of the three different conditions and then attempt to answer Questions (a) and (b).
There are no extra questions for this lesson. Simply submit your work to date to your online teacher.
