Outcomes
In this lesson you will
- For Case Study 1: Charity Fundraiser
- Create a quadratic function using given data.
- Create a function that describes a given context.
- Explore a graph to see where rate of change is positive, negarive, and zero.
- Approximate instantaneous rate of change.
- For Case Study 2: Population Change
- Examine a table of data to see where rates of change are positive, negative, and zero.
- Describe what a linear rate of change means.
- Create a quadratic function to fit data.
- Approximate instantaneous rate of change.
- For Extension: Rate of Change
- Conduct an investigation to compare rate of change in the volume of a sphere with respect to a change in its radius to the surface area of a sphere.
Case studies allow you to apply what was learned in the unit to new situations. They are designed to cover most, if not all, of the outcomes that were stated in each of the previous sections of this unit. There are no new outcomes for this section.
Introduction
In this section, there are two case studies and an Extension which apply the concepts and material that you learned in this unit. Pick the case study that appears most interesting to you and complete it. If you have the time and interest you might want to do the other case study and/or the extension. Your teacher will give you further directions about how to submit your work and how you will be evaluated on it.
Prerequisites
To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:
- The concepts and skills developed in Unit 02.
- The formulas for volume and surface area of a sphere.
