Outcomes

In this lesson you will

  • For Case Study 1:
    • Model real-world quadratic relationships.
    • Use the Quadratic formula to find the roots of a quadratic equation.
    • Use the discriminant to predict the nature of the roots of a quadratic equation, and determine the number of x-intercepts of the graph of a quadratic function.
    • Describe translations, reflections, and vertical stretches of the quadratic function .
  • For Case Study 2:
    • Find the roots of a quadratic equation and the location of the x-intercepts of the graph of the corresponding quadratic function.
    • Find the maximum and minimum value of the y-value of the graph of a quadratic function.
    • Determine a quadratic function, given the vertex and one other point on the parabola.
    • Create and analyze the transformational form of a quadratic function.
    • Use technology to graph and perform a quadratic regression.
  • For Case Study 3
    • Understand growth patterns that are linear, quadratic, or higher power.
    • Distinguish between arithmetic, quadratic, and higher power sequences.
    • Model real-world quadratic relationships.
    • Use the quadratic formula to find the roots of a quadratic equation.
    • Use the roots to determine the number and location of the x-intercepts of the graph of a quadratic function.

Case studies allow you to apply what was learned in the unit to new situations. They are designed to cover most, if not all, of the outcomes that were stated in each of the previous sections of this unit.  There are no new outcomes for this section.

Introduction

In this section, there are three case studies which apply the concepts and material that you learned in this unit. Pick one that appears most interesting to you and complete it. If you have the time and interest you might want to do two or all three of them. Your teacher will give you further directions about how to submit your work and how you will be evaluated on it.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • The concepts and skills developed in Unit 01.
