By the end of this lesson you will be able to answer questions like the ones in the pre-test below.

Answer the questions on the pre-test below in your Math 3103 binder. Then refer to the pages of the lesson that contain instruction on the questions you were unable to do, for which you got an incorrect answer, or for which you would like some further explanation.

Pre-test

1. Find the inverse of each of the following functions.

(a) f(x) = 3x

(b) f(x) = 2x + 1

(c) f(x) = 5(x -1) + 2

(d) f(x) = 0.3x - 2.4

(e) f(x) = 5

2. (i) Sketch the graph of each of the functions in Question 1 above.
(ii) Sketch the graph of each inverse on the same axes as the original function.
(iii) Determine which of the inverses are also functions.

  • The various methods of describing a function, viz. "f of x" notation, "y = " notation, and graphing.
  • How to rearrange a formula to solve for any given variable.
  • How to substitute one expression or formula into a second expression or formula.
  • How to draw the graph of a linear function.
  • The definition of an inverse function.
