Outcomes

By the end of this lesson you will be able to answer questions like the ones in the pre-test below.

Approach #1

Answer the questions on the pre-test below in your Math 3103 binder. Then refer to the pages of the lesson that contain instruction on the questions you were unable to do, for which you got an incorrect answer, or for which you would like some further explanation.

Approach #2

Proceed directly to the first page of the lesson without attempting the pre-test. To do this simply click on the Lesson button above. You can then return to this pre-test later and use it as a worksheet.

Pre-test

Solve each of the formulas in exercises 1 - 7 for the variable indicated:

1. for r

2. for D

3. for r1

4. for y2

5. for w1

6. for a

7. for I

8. The time it takes a pendulum to make one complete swing, T , is related to its
length, L , and the acceleration due to gravity, g , in the following way:

Rearrange the formula and solve for L. Use this rearranged formula to find the length of a pendulum which takes 1.2 sec to make one complete swing. For the acceleration due to gravity use g = 980 cm/s2

Answers

Students will be expected to:

  • Rearrange formulas to solve for any variable.
  • Simplify problem situations involving functions of two or more variables to functions of one variable.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • The addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division properties of equality.
  • How to rearrange equations with numerical coefficients.
  • How to solve equations which contain rational expressions.
  • How to solve radical equations.
