Outcomes

By the end of this lesson you will be able to answer questions like the ones in the pre-test below.

Approach #1

Answer the questions on the pre-test below in your Math 3103 binder. Then refer to the pages of the lesson that contain instruction on the questions you were unable to do, for which you got an incorrect answer, or for which you would like some further explanation.

Approach #2

Proceed directly to the first page of the lesson without attempting the pre-test. To do this simply click on the Lesson button above. You can then return to this pre-test later and use it as a worksheet.

Pre-test

Solve each of the formulas in exercises 1 - 6 for the variable indicated:

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

6.

7.  Solve the formula for h and use it to find h if:
      (a)  V= 100 cm3 and r = 5 cm
      (b)  V= 100 cm3 and r = 10 cm
      (c)  In (b) the radius, r, is doubled compared to its value in (a). What effect
did this have on the height, h ? Explain why this is so.

Answers

Students will be expected to:

  • Rearrange formulas to solve for any variable.
  • Simplify problem situations involving functions of two or more variables to functions of one variable.

Introduction

This section consists of four lessons as follows:

Lesson 01 Rearranging Formulas
In this lesson you will rearrange formulas to make any of the variables the subject of the formula. To do this you will use the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division property of equality.

Lesson 02 Rearranging Formulas
This lesson contains more work on rearranging formulas. In addition to the basic properties of equality and order, you will also be using factoring, and radicals.

Lesson 03 Functions of Two Variables
This lesson deals with problem situations that give rise to functions of two variables. You will learn how to generate these functions and then reduce them to functions of one variable using substitution.

Lesson 04 Functions of Two or More Variables
This lesson continues the work begun in Lesson 03 but deals with more complex situations and with functions of more than one variable.

Prerequisites

To be successful in this lesson, it would be helpful to know the following:

  • The addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division properties of equality.
  • How to rearrange equations with numerical coefficients.
  • How to factor polynomials, especially common factors.
