Answers to Self Test

1    (a) integers, rational numbers, real numbers
      (b) natural, whole, integer, rational, real
      (c) irrational, real
      (d) rational, real

2. (a) Smallest x coordinate is -4 for both graphs.

    (b) Largest x coordinate is 4 for both graphs.

    (c) For Graph 1 the x coordinate can be any real number between -4 and 4. However, for Graph 2 only integers can be used.

   (d) Graph 1 domain = {x | -4 £ x £ 4 , where x Î real numbers}.
        Graph 2 domain = {x | -4 £ x £ 4 , where x Î Integers}.

   (e) Smallest y coordinate is 0 for both graphs.
        Largest y coordinate is 8.
For Graph 1 the value of y can be any real number.
For Graph 2 the value of y can only be a rational number

        Graph 1 range = {y | 0 £ y £ 8 , where y Î real numbers}.
        Graph 2 range = {y | 0 £ y £ 8 , where y Î rational numbers}.
