Outcomes

By the end of this lesson you will be able to answer questions like the ones in the pre-test below.

If you prefer, you can proceed directly to the first page of the lesson without doing the pre-test. To do this simply click on the Lesson button above.

Alternately you can first answer the questions on the pre-test below in your Math 3103 binder. Then refer only to the pages of the lesson that contain instruction on the questions for which you get an incorrect answer or for which you would like some further explanation.

Pre-test

Answers

By the end of this section you should be able to:

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimal numbers mentally.
  • Express a given rational number in any of three ways, viz.: fraction, decimal, percentage.
  • Solve simple equations involving percentages
  • Apply percentage increase and decrease in problem solving situations.

Introduction

This section consists of two lessons as follows:

Lesson 01 Working with Decimals, Fractions, and Percent
This lesson deals with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers in decimal form. It develops place value and order of numbers. It also deals with converting among the forms: decimals to fractions, and percents; fractions to decimals and percent; percent to decimals and fractions.

Lesson 02 Using Percentages in Equations and Problem Situations
In this lesson you will solve simple equations involving percentages. You will also apply percentage increase and decrease in problem solving situations.

Prerequisites

Since this lesson is a review of topics you studied in earlier courses, you should know the following:

  • The rules for placement of decimals when multiplying and dividing.
  • How to convert fractions to decimals and percents.
  • How to convert percents to fractions and decimals.
  • How to convert decimals (both terminating and repeating) to fractions and percents.
