CDLI Courses

This page contains all of the information you will need to make informed decisions about the courses CDLI offers. This information includes a list of courses we host in each subject area, as well as the delivery method.

Delivery Methods:

CDLI Instructor-led courses are senior high school courses delivered to rural NL schools in which the course is unavailable locally. All course requests and registrations must go through the student's zoned school. Families cannot register directly with CDLI.

Course Review courses are asynchronous courses hosted in Brightspace, featuring video lessons, practice evaluations, and learning resources. They are designed to help students and teachers review curriculum content, prepare for midterm and final exams, and to support independent study. No credit is awarded on the completion of these courses.

PASS (Positive Action for Student Success) courses are delivered at the student's zoned school by the local Student Success Teacher.

Career Education

  • Career Education 2202
    • Description: This course is designed to help students develop the skills they need to continuously make effective life/work decisions throughout their lives. Students will be required to develop and maintain a comprehensive Personal Career Plan which will support students through their educational and life/work transitions. Creating, maintaining, reviewing, and sharing a coherent personal plan would help students to make thoughtful, informed, and appropriate decisions regarding their goals and their pathways through and beyond school. To receive credit for this course students are also required to complete a minimum of 30 career education hours prior to graduation which can include volunteerism, community service projects, mentorship, job shadowing, and other valuable forms of experiential learning.

Core French

  • Elementary Core French
    • Description: In the Grade 4 Core French program, language experiences are organized around familiar themes. While approximately 80% of class time is devoted to listening, speaking, and oral interaction, students are also provided with opportunities to read and write in French.

  • Intermediate Core French
    • Description: The intermediate Core French program helps students develop proficiency in oral language and learn about Francophone culture. In skill development, major emphasis is accorded to listening, speaking, and oral interaction. Reading and writing are also important and serve to reinforce listening and speaking skills.

  • Core French 1200
    • Description: Core French 1200 is designed to enable all students who have completed Intermediate Core French to experience success at second language learning at the high school level. The course provides students with the opportunity to consolidate their language skills from the Intermediate Core French program. Because the focus of learning is the purposeful use of language to perform real-life tasks through listening, speaking, reading, and writing, oral communication should be the foundation of the course. Throughout the course, these four skill areas will be integrated. Therefore, the onus is on the teacher to use French in the classroom and to be the language model, thereby conveying a strong message to students about the real reasons for learning French

  • Core French 2200
    • Description: Core French 2200, an academic course, is appropriate for all students who have completed Intermediate Core French. A student can receive credit for both Core French 1200 and Core French 2200; however, Core French 1200 is NOT a prerequisite for Core French 2200.

  • Core French 3200
    • Description: Core French 3200 is designed for students who have completed French 1200 and/or French 2200 to experience success at second language learning. The course provides students with the opportunity to consolidate and further enhance their second-language skills at the senior high level. The focus of learning is the purposeful use of language to perform real-life tasks through listening, speaking, reading and writing. Language and culture are intertwined in French 3200; therefore, socio-cultural and linguistic goals are interrelated throughout the course. Students who complete all required coursework, assignments, and assessments should be able to succeed in this course.

  • Drama 2206
    • Description: Drama 2206 helps students develop foundational personal and interpersonal skills necessary for continued growth. Drama reflects distinctive realities and supports significant understanding between individuals, cultures, and generations. Performing short pieces and sharing work is encouraged; however, full play production is not the intent. The focus of Drama 2206 is to help students develop a range of skills necessary to gain confidence within a variety of dramatic roles and contexts.

  • English 1201
    • Description: English 1201 is an academic course for students entering Level l of senior high school. The study of language and experiences will allow students to develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of literacy tools and communication devices. A range of texts will enable students to reflect on their own learning strategies as they develop confidence as language users. Students will interpret, analyze, and evaluate a variety of texts and create texts using various forms. The course is designed to extend the range of oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills necessary for success in daily life as well as secondary and post-secondary studies.

    • Description: English 3202 is designed for students entering Level III who continue to require extra support to strengthen essential literacy skills. Students participate in practical and engaging learning experiences as they respond personally, critically, and creatively to a variety of texts of increasing complexity based on their interests, abilities, and learning needs.

  • Writing 2203
    • Description: Writing 2203 offers students an opportunity to create texts as a means of personal expression as well as a method of communication. Students will learn to adapt their writing for a specific purpose and audience. This course emphasizes the characteristics of effective writing as well as the processes of writing in a variety of text forms. Students will develop ideas and express them effectively, clearly and precisely with emphasis on the modes of writing. They will practice specific skills inherent in inquiry and research processes and create texts which extend their learning. The emphasis throughout this course is on the development of students’ writing skills through extended practice, analysis, feedback, and revision.

English as an Additional Language

  • EAL 1205
    • Description: EAL 1205 is a beginner-level language arts course for EAL students in the senior high (Beginner level on the EAL Benchmarks for English Proficiency). This course is appropriate for students who have at least a transitional literacy level in another language or in English. The course helps students acquire language skills and strategies for listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course is intended to facilitate the development of English language skills essential for academic success, provide guidance and practice in the use of language-learning strategies, and help students develop the skills and knowledge needed for successful integration into the school and society.

      EAL 1205 is a 110-hour language arts course and may be delivered in two terms/220 hours. Students who successfully complete EAL 1205 will receive two optional language arts credits in the English Language Arts category.

  • EAL 2205
    • Description: EAL 2205 is a course designed for students who have been assessed and identified as requiring instruction in English as an additional language in order to succeed in the prescribed curriculum. EAL 2205 is the course for students assessed at a high-beginner to intermediate-level of English (Developing level on the EAL Benchmarks for English Proficiency) proficiency, usually acquired through at least one year of prior intensive studies in EAL. The course is designed to introduce students to academic English and develop their comprehension and production of academic English.

      EAL 2205 is a two-credit course which gives two core language arts credits. For the purposes of the grad scheduler, EAL 2205 can be used as equivalent to ELA 1201 or ELA 2201, depending on the grade level of the student. The course is designed for a minimum of 110 hours of instruction.

  • EAL 3205
    • Description: EAL 3205 is a course designed for students who have been assessed and identified as requiring instruction in English as an additional language in order to succeed in the prescribed curriculum. EAL 3205 is the course for students assessed at a high-intermediate to advanced level of English proficiency (High-Developing to Expanding level on the EAL Benchmarks for English Proficiency), usually acquired through at least two years of prior intensive studies in EAL. The course is designed to develop students’ academic English and improve their reading comprehension and written production of academic English.

      EAL 3205 is a two-credit course which gives two core language arts credits. For the purposes of the grad scheduler, EAL 3205 can be used as equivalent to ELA 1201 or ELA 2201, depending on the grade level of the student. The course is designed for a minimum of 110 hours of instruction.

  • EAL 3206
    • Description: EAL 3206 is a course designed for students who are transitioning from the English as an additional language program to prescribed curriculum in English Language Arts (ELA). EAL 3206 is for students at a high-intermediate to advanced level of English proficiency (High-Developing to Expanding level on the EAL Benchmarks for English Proficiency), usually acquired through at least two years of prior intensive studies in EAL. The course is designed to introduce students to the types of academic language, learning activities, and assessment strategies they will encounter in prescribed-curriculum language arts courses and provide sufficient practice to ensure success.

      EAL 3206 is a two-credit course which gives two optional language arts credits. The course is designed for a minimum of 110 hours of instruction. It introduces students to a range of text types and genres, including Fiction, Non-fiction, Novel, Poetry, Drama and Media.

  • EAL for Intermediate
    • Description: EAL for the Intermediate School is a beginner-level language arts course for EAL students in the junior high (Beginner level on the EAL Benchmarks for English Proficiency). This course is appropriate for students who have at least a transitional literacy level in another language or in English. The course helps students acquire language skills and strategies for listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course is intended to facilitate the development of English language skills essential for academic success, provide guidance and practice in the use of language-learning strategies, and help students develop the skills and knowledge needed for successful integration into the school and society.

    • Description: The intermediate mathematics program is designed to provide a balance among mental mathematics and estimation, paper and pencil exercises, and the use of technology. The Grade 7 Mathematics program builds upon skills developed in previous grades. It introduces concepts using manipulatives and develops them from the concrete to pictorial to symbolic. The program underscores the importance of mathematical fluency by integrating problem solving, reasoning, and making connections. The curriculum is organized into four strands: number, patterns and relations, shape and space, and statistics and probability.

    • Description: Applied Mathematics 1202 is the first course in the applied program for mathematics in Newfoundland and Labrador. This course is a prerequisite course for Applied Mathematics 2202. The applied mathematics program is designed to provide students with the mathematical understanding and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into some post-secondary programs (trades and some technical programs) or direct entry into the workforce. Students should consult with their mathematics teacher and/or guidance counsellor regarding the specific post-secondary programs for which they would be qualified to enroll upon completion of the applied program.

The advanced program for mathematics is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs. Students who complete the advanced program for mathematics will be better prepared for post-secondary programs that require the study of calculus.

  • Mathematics 3200
    • Description: Advanced Mathematics 3200 is the third course in the advanced program for mathematics in Newfoundland and Labrador. This program is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that require the study of calculus – specifically (but not limited to) the areas of science, mathematics and/or engineering.

  • Mathematics 3201
    • Description: Academic Mathematics 3201 is the final course in the academic program for mathematics in Newfoundland and Labrador. This program is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post-secondary programs that do not require the study of calculus. It is possible, however, for students who graduate with the academic mathematics program to later pursue post-secondary options requiring calculus. Many institutions will require these students to successfully complete additional pre-calculus mathematics courses upon entry.

  • Mathematics 3202
    • Description: Applied Mathematics 3202 is the final course in the applied program for mathematics in Newfoundland and Labrador. This program is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into some post-secondary programs (most trades and some technical programs) or direct entry into the workforce. Students should consult with their mathematics teacher and/or guidance counselor regarding the specific post-secondary programs for which they would be qualified to enroll upon completion of the applied program.

  • Mathematics 3208
    • Description: Mathematics 3208 (Calculus) is the fourth (and optional) course in the advanced program for mathematics in Newfoundland and Labrador. This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the fundamental topics generally found in a first-year university Calculus course. Students who enroll in the Mathematics 3208 course will have the option to write the Memorial University Calculus Placement Test (CPT) in June to obtain university credit.

Music

  • Applied Music 2206
    • Description: Applied Music 2206 is a practical course that offers students the opportunity to develop and apply musical and theoretical understandings, concepts and skills primarily through independent and interdependent performance, both as a sole performer (vocalist/instrumentalist) and as a sole part performer within works of two- and three-part textures.

      In addition to developing instrument specific technical competencies, students will develop psycho-motor skills, literacy skills, performance skills and aural skills. These will be integrated in the student’s practical application to more effectively foster the development of well-rounded musicianship and comprehensive musical understanding. Also embedded within the course are the touchstone skills of communication, critical thinking, creativity, problem solving and collaboration.

      The course is built on a spiral design in which level-specific musical concepts and skills are introduced and revisited multiple times in ever increasing depth and at higher levels of understanding and mastery. Students’ technical skills and musicianship increase as they explore a variety of repertoire.

      Music 2206 is to be delivered in small homogeneous or complementary groupings on the basis of skill level and instrumentation.

  • Experiencing Music 2200
    • Description: Experiencing Music 2200 is rooted in comprehensive musicianship. It is designed to develop students’ ability to respond to and engage with a wide range of music representative of many genres, cultures and contexts, inclusive of music relevant to and reflective of students. As a practical study of music, students will experience music in all modes of musical engagement - performing, listening and creating. Active engagement is the foundation of this course.

      Students study music of various forms, genres, time periods, and of particular composers, nations and cultures, through skill-based experiences. They develop an understanding of the elements and styles of music and make connections to the broader contexts of music and culture. Through increasing knowledge and understanding, students develop their ability to value music in a variety of contexts and respond critically to the expressive qualities of music.

      Students will explore the relationships between various styles of music, music and culture, and music and other art forms; the impact of technology and technological innovation in music; the music industry; and the music makers. The potential exists for collaboration with community artists and programs involving career development and entrepreneurial education.

    • Description: Environmental Science 3205 is a course that provides students with an introduction to the content of environmental science. This course is activity-oriented and employs a variety of learning/teaching strategies that emphasize the development of higher-level process skills. Through objective and critical examination of present environmental management and conservation procedures, an appreciation for the need of creating a sustainable environment is promoted.

    • Description: Science 2200 is an activity-based course designed to contribute to the development of basic concepts and skills through the study of Life Science and Earth/Space Science. Throughout this course students are provided an opportunity to develop their scientific literacy by engaging in the process of Inquiry, Problem Solving, and Decision Making. Core activities provide opportunities for students to develop practical laboratory skills and to engage in the scientific process. STSE (Science, Technology, Society, and Environment) Modules provide students with the opportunity to go beyond the facts to examine how science permeates our everyday lives.

    • Description: This course is designed for students who may be interested in exploring careers in Engineering and Engineering Technology. Students work with computer aided design (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer numerical control (CNC) sequences of advanced design and automation. Production will include tools for stock preparation and automatic routers.
    • Prerequisites: Although not a prerequisite, completion of Design and Fabrication 1202 is recommended before commencing Design and Fabrication 2202.

    • Description: Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) 3203 is designed to introduce students to occupational health and safety principles as they prepare to enter the workplace in their chosen careers.     • Description: Visual Art 1202 is designed as a practical foundational course that can be expanded and elaborated upon in studio courses at higher grade levels. In Visual Art 1202, students will build upon prior experiences with the elements and principles of design.     • Description: Visual Art 3202 is an advanced studio-based course that will enable students to further develop their knowledge and skills in visual arts through practical application within five visual art disciplines. Students will apply the creative process, problem-solving skills, and critical analysis in their exploration of a wide range of themes and contexts through advanced studio work in drawing, painting, sculpture, and two other elective disciplines (different from those explored in level two) from the options of printmaking, fibre arts, pottery, graphic arts, photography, functional art, and public art.
