Investigation 4: Dependent and Independent Events
Test yourself (Answers)
- A and B are independent events. A head or a tail on the first toss
has no impact on the second toss. The total possible outcomes on the
second toss is still 2 (head or tail) and the total favorable
outcomes is still 1 (coin has only one head).
- C and D are dependent events because there is no replacement. The
total possible outcomes on the first draw is 4 and on the second
draw is 3. Also the total favorable outcomes could be 0 (if 1
occurred on the first draw) or 1 (if some other number occurred on
the first draw). Clearly the probability of event D is affected by
event C.
