Computer Control Systems

Investigate the Phidgets Interface Kit

Open the Phidgets interface kit and identify all the components

  • Identify the wheels and investigate how they mount to the motor shaft.  Note the splines on the motor shaft and inside the wheels.  When you mount the motors, you will need to ensure that they align, otherwise they will be damaged and will not be usable.  Don't mount them at this time.
  • Identify the screws that are used to secure the wheels to the motor shaft, but do not open the packaging at this time.
  • Find the rubber friction bands for the wheels and mount them on the wheels.
  • Carefully replace all parts in their packaging and return to the teacher.  You will be using them in a later activity.

Investigate Computer Control

  • Conduct a survey of equipment, tools and toys.  identify those that have computer control.  Keep in mind that computers are often embedded in the device.  You may not see an obvious monitor or keyboard.  Appliances, vehicles and entertainment devices are all computerized.
  • Identify what is being controlled and how you, as a user, can manipulate that control.
