Ideation

Concept Fan

Read the following description of a situation related to energy and power technology.

  • Your team is competing in a solar car vehicle speed challenge.  Vehicles will be tested in full sunlight, and will use the solar array to drive the motor directly, without any onboard energy storage.

Complete the following ideation activity

  • Develop a concept fan to identify all the issues related to the situation, and to identify problems that need to be solved

Brainstorming

Read the following description of a situation related to energy and power technology.

  • Your team is competing in a solar heating challenge.  You have to design and fabricate a solar heater that can raise the temperature of 1 liter or water by 50C in the least amount of time.  The test will be conducted in direct sunlight, at the same time, on all challenger's systems.  Only direct conversion of radiant solar energy into heat can be used to heat the water.

Complete the following ideation activity

  • Use a brainstorming session to identify possible solutions
  • Use additional brainstorming sessions to identify various sub systems that will be required for each possible solution

Sketching and Doodling

Read the following description of a situation related to energy and power technology.

  • Your team is competing in an electricity-from-wind energy generation competition.  The test will be conducted outdoors on a windy day, at the same time, on all challenger's systems. A voltmeter and an ammeter (or an energy meter) will be used to measure energy output and determine which system produces the most electrical wind energy over a 2 minute period.

Complete the following ideation activity

  • Use a sketching session to identify solution ideas.
