Jamie Lake Wins Gold Medal at National Wresting CompetitionPosted on May 24, 2016
Jamie Lake adds to her collection of medals with her latest achievement, the attainment of Gold during the National Canadian Juvenile Wrestling competition in Calgary during April 2016. She won all four of her matches, defeating her opponents and claiming the 49 kilogram gold in the Greco Roman style division. She also added silver in Juvenile freestyle to her successes at this event. Jamie is a little over 5 feet and under 110 pounds. She is an exceptional athlete with experience competing in provincial, national and internationals levels.
Jamie Lake is a very mature and humble Level 3 student at Roncalli Central High in Avondale. She is an extremely well rounded individual who excels in music, sports and academics.
As an academic, Jamie is regularly one of the top three students in the school. She has been on the honor roll since she started at Roncalli in grade 7 and continues to find the balance between academic success and her school and community involvement. Jamie is a member of the school’s Social Justice group and regularly helps with recycling blitzes and any event where a helping hand is required.
Jamie is also a very talented singer and musician playing the piano and the guitar very well. She performs at community functions and at all school concerts and special events. Upon graduation, the school will miss her for both her musical contributions and her athletic success.
Athletically, Jamie has literally been a powerhouse in her contributions to the school. On any day of the week, she can be found in the schools fitness room by 6:30 AM training with her strength and conditioning coach. She has developed her strength to a world-class level. She has competed in provincial and national powerlifting competitions and currently holds five national powerlifting records. She is also a pivotal member of the school’s rugby team. She led the league in scoring this season and helped the team capture its second consecutive provincial championship. You will also find her in the wrestling room every afternoon focusing on the sport that is her true passion. She is continuously working her technical skills and helping develop a program that has won five consecutive provincial banners.
This past year, wrestling has brought her tremendous success and much unsolicited recognition. Last spring she was added to the Canadian Cadet National squad that spent 2 weeks representing Canada at international wresting events in Romania and Spain where she won a gold medal at an international event. This past summer she wrestled in another international event, The Canada Cup, which took place as a part of the Pan American Games and she took home a gold medal. This experience set the tone for a very competitive year of wrestling. At the provincials in February, Jaime won Gold while wrestling up two weight classes and in the boys division. This was tremendous and deliberate preparation for the Canadian National Wrestling Championships this past April. Jamie took all of this training and experience and turned it into a Gold Medal in Greco-Roman and a Silver Medal in Juvenile Freestyle wrestling.
For the future, Jamie plans to pursue a degree in engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland while competing for the Sea-Hawks wrestling team.
Jamie is currently doing Math 3208 with CDLI.
CDLI and Roncalli congratulate Jamie on her amazing accomplishment in wrestling!
