Swift Current, Saskatchewan
Constructed in memory of the 14th Canadian Hussars and its
8th Reconnaissance Regiment (14 CH).
At the entrance of the Recreation Centre (the old Armories) stands a Sherman battle
tank, dedicated to the members of Swift Current's 14th Canadian Hussars
and its 8th Reconnaissance Regiment (14 CH). On Monday, May 8, 1995, on the
50th anniversary of VE Day and as a part of "Canada Remembers" in Swift
Current, this tank with its new bronze plaque was re-dedicated. The plaque was purchased
by a local "Canada Remembers" committee with approximately $500.00 donated by the (14
CH) Last Reunion Fund. The ceremony was attended by Legion Comrades Eldon Kirbyson
(left) and Dr. Nobled Irwin (right), who were both second World War veterans of the
8th Reconnaissance Regiment (14 CH).
During the battle on D-Day, Lt. Irwin was wounded. Wireless Operator Eldon Kirbyson
drove Lt. Irwin and others to a first aid station near Caen, France. The driver did not
realize he was aggravating the others wounds as he drove. At the time, neither of the
veterans knew each other!
