Royal Air Force Memorial

Swift Current, Saskatchewan

Constructed in September, 1994 in memory of the Royal Air Force.

This cairn is located on the left-hand side of the entrance to Swift Current's Airport. The monument is dedicated to the British Royal Air Force's #39 Service Flying School. The flying school was closed in March, 1944.

Construction of the cairn was started by the late Arnold Zabel in September, 1994. Arnold was a Flying Officer Instructor at this airport in World War II. It was Arnold's wish to have a memorial erected to honour all who were involved in the school. However, he barely started this project when he became terminally ill; the site was then completed by the 605 Tarry Squadron Air Cadets and the city of Swift Current. A bronze plaque was purchased by Branch #56 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

On Sunday, May 7, 1995, as part of the Federal Goverment's "Canada Remembers" program marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, the cairn was dedicated by Arnold's widow, Ruby, and their daughters, Bonnie, Toni, and Yvonne.
