Harry Beet Memorial

Glaslyn, Saskatchewan

The Memorial was constructed in 1995 in memory of Harry Churchill Beet who received the Victoria Cross in 1901 for his service in the South African War.

A History of Harry Churchill Beet taken from the "For Valour" Saskatchewan Victoria Cross Recipients booklet, July, 1995.

"Near noon on April 22, 1900, just outside the town of Wakkerstoom, South Africa, a company of British Army mounted infantry was engaged in combat with opposing forces.

As the British retreated, one of their soldiers was shot and seriously wounded. Corporal Harry Beet went back and dragged his wounded comrade to cover, where he tended to the soldier's injuries, and provided protection of their position until darkness fell and they were rescued by members of their regiment. As a result of his actions Corporal Beet was promoted to Sergeant, and the Duke of York presented him with the Victoria Cross in 1901."

The memorial is located on Harry Beet's homestead, 12 miles west of Glaslyn. The maintenance is provided by Art and Alice Wood.
